Summer Activities and Places to Visit

Summer at Colonial Bay is a time for family, fun and relaxation.

Steps from your cottage you can enjoy Muskoka at its best - water, fresh air, nature.

With 300' of sand bottom lakefront on clean clear Peninsula Lake, playing at the lake is a summer favorite. Swimming, building Sand Castles, canoeing or relaxing in a Muskoka Chair will ease most into the "summer holiday mode".

Swim, kayak, master the skill of standup paddleboarding, canoe, read a book, take out a rowboat, badminton, tell tales at the campfire, roast marshmellows, volley ball, fish, build sand castles, sun bathe, rent a mountain bike (off-site), play a board game, soccer, hike, birding, golf, relax in a muskoka chair, wildlife viewing.

Day and 1/2 Day Trips

Algonquin Park - Just 20 minutes(32 KM.) to the west gate from Colonial Bay. Spending a day or more in Algonquin Park will add enjoyment to your vacation. Make your day trip as rugged or gentle as you want, the options are limitless. Hike, canoe, visit the Logging Museum, Visitors Centre, Art Gallery or simple drive along Highway # 60 and watch for moose.

Boat Cruises - Muskoka Steam Ships, Lake Muskoka, Gravenhurst. The Island Queen, Georgian Bay, Parry Sound. Lady Muskoka, Muskoka River and Lake Muskoka, Bracebridge. Lake of Bays Boat Tours Relax and enjoy a memorable experience aboard the "Vicky J", a 27 foot deluxe pontoon boat. Join Capain Bruce on a 3 hour Guided Tour exploring the lake's rich history, its natural features, and points of interest - OR - Charter the boat privately and enjoy an outing to celebrate a special occasion or just a fun day out on the water with friends.

Muskoka Heritage Place - In the Town of Huntsville (10KM) this reconstructed settlement offers a glimpse into the pioneer ways of the area. Take a ride on the  reconstructed rail line that once transported visitors from Peninsula Lake to Lake of Bays.

Golf - Deerhurst Highlands, Deerhurst Lakeside, and Huntsville Downs are 18 hole courses while Grandview and Whispering Pines are 9 hole. These five courses are located within 15 minutes of Colonial Bay. An additional 8 courses are located within 45 minutes of Colonial Bay.

Oxtongue River-Ragged Falls - Off Highway 60 on the Oxtongue River just before Algonquin Park. Hike in to the Falls and climb the paths or rocks. A picnic and afternoon swim at the Falls makes a great afternoon. For the more adventurous - rent a canoe at Oxtongue Lake and paddle up to the Falls.

Santa's Village - 45 minutes from Colonial Bay in the Town of Bracebridge, Santa's Village is an amusement park and Santa's summer home. There are rides and activities for all ages.

Dorset Lookout Tower - The old fire tower sits on top of a hill over looking Lake of Bays. After climbing the tower finish your visit to Dorset with ice cream at the general store.

Echo Valley ObservatoryArrowhead Provincial Park, Twin Movie Theater, Bowling, Shopping and Restaurants are all located close to Colonial Bay

Winter activities at Colonial Bay

Snowmobile, Alpine Skiing, Snowshoeing, Cross Country Skiing, Hiking - Reading a book with a cup of hot chocolate in front of your fireplace, Skating, Shopping, Dining Out, Visit Friends.

Downhill skiing is just 5 minutes from Colonial Bay at Hidden Valley Highlands Ski Club. Hidden Valley offers a variety of runs from novice to black diamond. Ski and Snowboard rentals are available at the hill. Hidden Valley has an excellent team of Ski and Board Instructors available daily. Night skiing is open Thursday-Saturday all winter, Christmas break and March break.

Some of the best Cross Country Skiing in Muskoka takes place at Algonquin and Arrowhead Provincial Parks. Miles of groomed and track set trails are open at each park. If you need equipment you can rent it at Arrowhead Park or on the way to Algonquin Park at the Outfitters.

Ice skate through the forest in Arrowhead Provincial Park. The winding 1.3 km skating trail is a winter experience like no other.

Dogsled expeditions at North Ridge Ranch (15 minute drive).  Tours start at $205/adult (13+) plus HST and $145/child (12 & under) plus HST for a half day. Book your tour at

Snowmobiling while at Colonial Bay

Snowmobilers can start from our front door and travel 1000's of miles of well maintained and groomed trail. A trip Around Algonquin Park (R.A.P. Tour) or visits to Haliburton, North Bay or Parry Sound can all start at Colonial Bay. We support the Algonquin Snowmobile Club and the Muskoka Snowmobile Region by donating volunteer hours for administrative work, trail maintenance and grooming. More Snowmobile information.

Snowmobiling in Muskoka is outstanding and we are located on the trail.

Miles and miles of trails join communities, restaurants and accommodation. Leave from the front door of your cottage at Colonial Bay and travel as far as you like - some sledders stay local and cover 50 or 100 miles per day while the high mileage crowd may cover 250 miles. The options are endless.

Good conditions typically start in January. By this time the lakes are usually safe and the trails are set up for the winter.
